Youth Intervention Specialist I

SUMMARY

The Youth Intervention Specialist (YIS) I, in cooperation with the Youth Coordinator, Education Department Manager, and other Tribal Staff is responsible for planning and developing a youth program that meets the directives of the GTB Education LLL Sub-Department. The Youth Intervention Specialist I will provide appropriate activities for the youth serviced by the Tribal Satellite area. The YIS I is a role model and advocate for the youth and must have a commitment to excellence and caring when working with tribal member children.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or GED certificate required.
  • 1-3 years' experience working with Native American Youth.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Must have and maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work a scheduled 40-hour week, during appropriate hours based on the youth programs or as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Comply with all GTB policies & procedures including the GTB Children's Code.
  • To be in compliance with the Privacy Act and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality of participants served by the program.
  • To collaborate with Tribal programs, local, state and state agencies.
  • Coordinate with the Youth Services task force staff and other GTB staff to assist in fulfilling participants' service strategies.
  • Will work at planned youth activities and is responsible for maintaining a 1:5 youth ratio off-site & 1:10 on-site for supervision, or as required by program.
  • Attend training when necessary.
  • To recruit youth between the ages of 5-19 in coordination with the Education Life Long Learning Program staff. Outreach and home visits as required encouraging participation in program activities.
  • To maintain personal standards of high character and serve as a positive role model for Native American Youth.
  • To coordinate with other agencies to provide a work experience opportunity for youth to participate in after-school and during the summer.
  • Arrange for pick up of participants as needed or scheduled.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that related to the continuing delivery of service.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.
  • Exceptional detail and follow-up skills.
  • General proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Windows, Word, Excel, and use of associated peripherals, and other Microsoft office products.
  • Basic general proficiency in 10-key and other office equipment.
  • Basic math skills
  • Ability to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with Native Americans and their families.
  • Must be able to provide accurate communication in regards to required narrative reports.
  • Must be able to collect and present data.
  • Must be professional with youths, families and community.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED certificate required.
  • 1-3 years' experience working with Native American Youth.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise youth program site workers/volunteers.
  • Monitor youth participants and document progress.
  • Working with high maintenance youth.

TRAVEL REQUIREMETNS

  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • A Chauffeurs License is necessary to drive tribal vehicles to transport youth.
  • Local travel is frequently required.
  • Out-of-town travel is occasionally required.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Involves sedentary and physically active work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/or negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Occasionally requires lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
  • Regularly requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm.
  • Regularly requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Occasionally requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Occasionally requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The Youth Site Coordinator must be able to exercise good judgment regarding the following:

  • When and how to respond to requests for mentoring youth and/or staff.
  • Must have the patience to work with children and participate in the program.
  • Must be able to tolerate noise level of our tribal youth.

COMMENTS

Native American preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
