Youth Coordinator - Program Director

SUMMARY

The Youth Coordinator/Program Director, will work with the Department Manager, Youth Intervention Specialist and other Tribal Staff as appropriate to meet the objectives of the Youth Services Program. The Program Director must have a commitment to excellence and caring when working with the youth. Together with other staff, a plan shall be developed and implemented which will allow for ongoing programs for youth serviced by programs at all GTB Satellite Offices. The Program Director is a role model and advocate for all youth. The Program Director will have a commitment to youth and their success for life by promoting successful transition into adulthood. To oversee all project activities, which includes program functions and operations, training, inspecting work, coaching and counseling, conducting performance appraisals, budgeting, and staff hiring and disciplinary action for personnel.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or GED required. Minimum of 1 year experience working with computer.

  • Must have a valid Chauffeur Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

  • Must maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.

  • 3-5 years' experience working with Native American Youth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work a flexible 40-hour week, during appropriate hours based on the youth programs or as scheduled by supervisor.

  • Maintain timely submission of all reporting requirements and budget monitoring, baselines and budget preparation, in addition to the timely submission of all appropriate paperwork for disbursement of funds for payroll, travel, and vendor payments.

  • Comply with all GTB policies & procedures including the GTB Children's Code.

  • To be in compliance with the Privacy Act and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality of participants served by the program.

  • Hold monthly staff meetings with program staff, attend monthly Youth Council meetings.

  • Plan and organize with the Department Manager, ongoing training for staff development.

  • Address youths' concerns immediately and attempt to resolve these issues at the Program Director level.

  • To collaborate with Tribal programs, local, state and state agencies.

  • Coordinate with the Youth Services task force staff and other GTB staff to assist in fulfilling participants' service strategies.

  • Assist staff with planning equitable services and activities for youth, families, and the community to meet the objectives of the Youth Services Programs.

  • Attend training as necessary.

  • Ensure that reporting requirements are being met for all grants and programs in a timely fashion.

  • Must be able to provide accurate communication in regards to required narrative reports.

  • To recruit youth between the ages of 5-19 in coordination with the Education Life Long Learning Program staff. Outreach and home visits as required encouraging participation in program activities.

  • To maintain personal standards of high character and serve as a positive role model for Native American Youth.

  • To coordinate with other agencies to provide a work experience opportunity for youth to participate in after-school and during the summer.

  • Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.

  • Exceptional detail and follow-up skills.

  • General proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Windows, Word, Excel, and use of associated peripherals, and other Microsoft office products.

  • Basic general proficiency in 10-key and other office equipment.

  • Basic math skills

  • Ability to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with Native Americans and their families.

  • Must be able to provide accurate communication in regards to required narrative reports.

  • Must be able to collect and present data.

  • Must be professional with youths, families and community.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED certificate required, college degree in related field preferred.

  • 3 -5 years experience working with Native American Youth.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise Youth Invention Specialist I and II and volunteers.

  • Monitor youth participants and document progress.

  • Working with high maintenance youth.

TRAVEL REQUIREMETNS

  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

  • Must have reliable transportation

  • A Chauffeur's License is necessary to drive tribal vehicles.

  • Local travel is frequently required.

  • Out-of-town travel is occasionally required.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Involves sedentary and physically active work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/or negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Occasionally requires lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds. Regularly requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Regularly requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers. Occasionally requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks. Occasionally requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The Youth Coordinator/Program Director must be able to exercise good judgment regarding the following:

  • When and how to respond to requests for mentoring youth and/or staff.

  • Must have the patience and enjoy working with large groups of children.

  • Must be able to tolerate noise level of our tribal children.

COMMENTS

Native American preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
