Wastewater Apprentice

SUMMARY

This person will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Peshawbestown, Turtle Creek or Grand Traverse Resort & Spa water system and wastewater treatment plant and collection system. Included in these responsibilities will be maintenance of the wastewater plant and lift stations, all laboratory work pertaining to the analysis of the wastewater.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform routine maintenance on the equipment in the wastewater plant to include, pumps, blowers, air makeup unit, decanter, mixer, mechanical valves, filtration unit etc.
  • Perform routine maintenance of the collection system including the pump station and grinder.
  • Take samples of the influent and effluent wastewater and monitoring wells
  • Perform testing on the influent and effluent wastewater for; solids, phosphorus, pH, ammonia nitrogen, BOD, etc.
  • Complete daily readings and change flow charts.
  • Testing of the wastewater must comply with procedures outlined in the manual "Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater".

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to perform or learn to perform laboratory analysis using a symphony SB30-I ion-analyzer, spectrophotometer 20D, YSI 5000 DO meter, and other related equipment.
  • Proficient using windows MS Word and Excel

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Preferred 2-5 years' experience in a skilled trade such as: plumbing, electrical, mechanical, construction, etc.
  • State of Michigan Class S4 water certification $0.75/hour increase to base rate
  • State of Michigan Class D4 water certification $0.75/hour increase to base rate
  • State of Michigan Class D wastewater certification $1.00/hour increase to base rate
  • With water and wastewater certifications apprentice will Achieve operator status

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Must have appropriate endorsements for all vehicles required to operate in the performance of duties
  • Must obtain a State of Michigan Class D Wastewater Operator Certification within 2 years of testing eligibility.
  • Must obtain a State of Michigan Class S4 and D4 Water Operator Certification with 2 years of testing eligibility.

  • Dell computer system, HP 970 printer, HP T45 fax machine, calculator
  • Aqua-Aerobics mixer, decanter, mini-disk filter, UniOp control computer
  • Centrifugal pumps, chart recorder, 400 kw generator, 5 to 50 HP Roots Blowers,
  • Other equipment pertaining to water and wastewater treatment

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Visual observation of microorganisms with the use of a microscope
  • Lifting of pumps and motors in excess of 50 pounds
  • Climbing ladders and stairs
  • Entry into confined spaces using proper safety equipment

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Proficient in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and algebra
  • Analyze laboratory analysis to determine program modifications
  • Stress of being on call 24/7
  • Ability to trouble shoot problems with electrical and mechanical equipment

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Outside work 60% of time; eventually be on call 24/7
  • Extremely hazardous chemicals (Nitric acid, Phosphoric acid, Ferric Chloride, Chlorine, Sulfuric acid, Hydrochloric acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Ammonium Chloride, Potassium Persulfate)
  • Electrical hazards when dealing with equipment
  • Environmental hazards with the raw and treated sewage
  • Confined space entry hazards
  • Very loud noise levels from blowers
  • Working in extremely high places (top of water towers)

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy regarding confidentiality is a must.
