SUMMARY

The Technician/Shop Steward will assist in yearly assessments to gather biological data, as well as maintain and service all vessels, trailers, gear, and equipment relating to the Natural Resources and Conservation Departments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and be insurable by GTB's insurance carrier.
  • Must have general knowledge of local fish, wildlife, forestry and ecosystems including their identification.
  • Must have mechanical skills and be able to demonstrate them proficiently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain, repair, and winterize all motorized vessels and equipment.
  • Maintain and repair all trailers.
  • Maintain records of all maintenance, repairs, and winterization of vehicles, vessels, and equipment.
  • Make minor electrical repairs and install electrical equipment such as: GPS, Radar, Stereo, Depth Finder, Ship to Shore Radio, etc.
  • Perform minor metal fabrication using the Departments welder, torches, chop saw, and shop tools.
  • Assist with raising and lowering of dock system at Marinas.
  • Maintain and organize tools and other equipment located at NRD's warehouse.
  • Maintain workshop area, gear storage, and vessel storage within warehouse.
  • Assists with resource inventories pertaining to fish, wildlife, and plant and forest cover by collecting and compiling a variety of data.
  • Work and cooperate with other departments on various projects.
  • Follow all funding agency and Grand Traverse Band policies and procedures.
  • Other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • This position regularly utilizes, maintains, repairs, and calibrates specialized and sometimes dangerous equipment including electrofishing, telemetry, and water quality measuring equipment; boats, snowmobiles and off-road vehicles; gill nets, trap nets, seines and trawls; and animal traps, vegetation sampling equipment and constructions tools.
  • Ability to read and follow written procedures.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy required.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to a wide range of practical problems.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; self motivator; and establishing work priorities is required.
  • Must be able to weld, use torches and fabricate metal.
  • Must be able to operate and maintain various sized vessels with outboard engines or inboard engines.
  • Must have mechanical skills and be able to demonstrate to a high degree of proficiency.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact and respect.
  • Able to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Basic proficiency in computers, including Microsoft Office products and database applications, e-mail and Internet.
  • Basic proficiency in typing and other office equipment.
  • Employee must be able to read and write legibly.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • Trade school for welding, metal fabrication, HVAC, etc., preferred.
  • General knowledge of local fish, wildlife, forestry and ecosystems including their identification.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid, unrestricted driver's license and be insurable by GTB's insurance carrier.

Federal Tax Exemption: 26 U.S.C. 7873 (a) (1) provides an exemption from federal income tax on income, including wages, derived by members of the Tribe in the exercise of a fishing rights-related activity of the Tribe. 26 U.S.C. 7873 (a) (2) provides an exemption from federal employment taxes, including FICA taxes, on wages paid to members of the Tribe for services performed in a fishing rights-related activity of the Tribe.

This Marina/Shop Steward position will be exempt from taxation as cited above when filled by an enrolled member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. This Marina/Shop Steward position will not be exempt from taxation as cited above when filled by an individual who is not an enrolled member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, notwithstanding membership in any other federally-recognized Indian Tribe. This exemption will be re-evaluated and examined on an annual basis to determine its continuing validity.

Specialized equipment include electrofishing equipment, boats and motors, gill net lifters, generators, trap net lifters, water quality measuring devices, radio telemetry, remote temperature recording devices, triple beam balances, microfiche, microscope, ice augers, trap nets, gillnets, seines, trawls, vegetation sampling equipment, and construction tools, wire feed welder, oxygen/acetylene torches, hand tools, air tools, metal cutting equipment, electrical diagnostic tools, HVAC tools, Chop Saw (Metal and Wood), Skill Saw, Table Saw, Plasma Cutter, Power Washer, Electric Winch, Boat/Motor.
