Strongheart Center Supervisor

SUMMARY

To be responsible for the management and the supervision of programs within the Strongheart Center, to include developing and coordinating the fitness activities of the Special Diabetes Program. In addition, this position provides individualized one-on-one assessment, coaching, goal-setting and on-going education and support to diabetic patients and patients at risk for diabetes and works closely with the Special Diabetes Multidisciplinary Team to monitor patients' progress and needs. The Supervisor will also take on the role and responsibilities of Program Director.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Recreational Sports or related field.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Four years' of experience of a qualifying nature which includes supervisory experience and recreational marketing experience.
  • Clinical experience or knowledge of diabetes required.
  • Experience working with the elderly populations and some experience coordinating and overseeing a diabetes program.
  • Must possess a Personal Trainer Certification and a Certified Personal Trainer Exercise Science background.
  • Must have and maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide overall management of the Strongheart Center to include daily operations, personnel, budget, and safety issues.
  • Assist with the programming and design for operations of facility.
  • Provide fiscal accountability of all operations.
  • Provide for the training and supervision of Strongheart Center
  • Monitor, coordinate and implement facility operations, functions, activities and personnel.
  • Responsible for the security of the Strongheart Center.
  • Ensure the Strongheart Center and surrounding properties are maintained to provide a quality business environment at all times.
  • Must remain current with applicable local, state, federal and tribal laws, codes, ordinances, policies and procedures to stay in compliance.
  • Responsible for short term, and long range planning, cost saving development, contract preparation and negotiations.
  • Responsible for the maintenance and care of all Strongheart Center equipment, which includes all exercise equipment, fitness machines, free weights, etc.
  • Responsible for the safe and effective use of the Strongheart Center.
  • Seek other sources of revenue, i.e., grants, contracts, foundations, etc.
  • Responsible for monitoring utilities, e.g., reducing costs.
  • Responsible for the marketing of the facility and recreational activities/functions.
  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining lighting, sounds and alarm systems.
  • Responsible for all set-up and breakdown for classes and indoor events.
  • Responsible for coordinating the schedule of all activities.
  • Develop, coordinate and evaluate the Fitness Program for overall participants at the Center.
  • Coordinate fitness activities, including initial assessment of current state of fitness and cardiovascular health risk.
  • Individualize program geared to individual's current state of fitness and cardiovascular health risk.
  • Provide health preventative measures for healthy lifestyles on individual and group basis.
  • Orient clients to weight equipment.
  • Educate clients in benefits and types of aerobic exercise.
  • Provide motivation and encouragement to clients with frequent contact and on-going support.
  • Assists Center participants in monitoring their own progress toward fitness and weight loss goals.
  • Develop, coordinate and evaluate the Fitness Program for Special Diabetes.
  • Provide diabetes and health education on individual and group basis.
  • Coach and motivate diabetes patients and patients at risk for diabetes.
  • Educate clients in benefits of types of aerobic exercise.
  • Monitor all sign-in sheets and provide monthly reporting to supervisor.

  • Must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.
  • Exceptional detail and follow-up skills.
  • Work requires proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
  • Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Recognizes technical problems or deviations from normal procedure, and confers with immediate supervisor to resolve them after searching precedents to develop a recommended solution.
  • Uses good judgement in interpreting guidelines, in adapting department procedures, or in recommending approaches or solutions for specific problems.
  • Attend all training classes necessary to keep skills updated.
  • Knowledge of budgeting and accounting.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of business organization and management.
  • Knowledge of the organization and functions of a business operation with emphasis on departments to which assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Exercise supervision over administrative/professionals, clerical, graduate assistants and student employees assigned. Also supervision of Gym Attendants and other staff volunteers.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment such as, calculators, computers, modem, copiers, fax, phone systems, etc. Various exercise equipment, fitness machines and free-weights.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking, and lifting heavy objects, such as various exercise equipment. Climbing stairs to conduct security checks or monitor facility. Must be able to use fitness machines and free weights. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Also requires manual dexterity to operate various exercise equipment, fitness machines and free-weights and other office equipment.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee uses judgement in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines are involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The work environment is a two-story gymnasium, handicap accessible and climate controlled. Noise atmosphere due to gymnasium, sound system, and events are held both inside and outdoors. Weather conditions vary with the four seasons for outdoor events. Working conditions encountered will vary from extremely busy at times, to slower, not very busy at other times.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a criminal history background check and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
