Staff Accountant
SUMMARY
This position assists in the maintenance and accuracy of the General Ledger in the accounting system. This position assists in preparing, recording, and distributing the per capita checks that are provided to the tribal membership. This position makes all necessary travel arrangements for tribal government staff, in addition to processing all travel closeouts. This position also serves as the backup for the payroll and accounts payable functions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Two or more years of accounting experience is required. A combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered.
- Must be willing to work towards an Associates Accounting Degree.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the preparation of all financial reports for all programs of the Tribe. Reports will include grant status reports, financial statements, general ledger reports and any other month end reports
- Reconcile checks daily.
- Prepare and enter journal entries after approval by senior accounting staff.
- Assist in updating and maintaining the tribal member databases used for per capita and RTM.
- Assist in other duties associated with the per capita distribution, i.e., deductions from Tribal Court and answer any tribal membership questions in regard to per capita distribution.
- Assist with the burial fund payment and answer any tribal membership questions concerning burial fund.
- Support senior staff with annual audit.
- Serve as backup for the Payroll and Accounts Payable functions when necessary.
- Process all Request to Travels – all travel arrangements and accommodations which includes preparing travel advances and purchase orders for each employee's travel arrangements.
- Process all travel closeouts and notify staff of delinquent closeouts.
- Keep current on all Federal Register per diem rates and mileage.
- Issue Sales Tax Exemption Certificates to tribal members and the tribe.
- Prepare all State reports that may be required under the Tribal/State Tax Agreement.
- Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

- Exceptional attention to detail, analytical and follow-up skills are required.
- Ability to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines.
- Work requires proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
- Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
- Uses good judgement in interpreting guidelines, in adapting department procedures, or in recommending approaches or solutions for specific problems.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Two years of accounting experience is required. Experience in reconciliation, payroll, and preparation is desired. A combination of education, experience and training that provides the skills, abilities and knowledge may be considered.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervisory responsibility is required.
EQUIPMENT TO BE USED
General office equipment such as calculators, computers, modem, copiers, fax, phone systems, etc.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking, and lifting heavy objects, such as a case of paper or several books at once. Also requires manual dexterity to operate office equipment, keyboarding, copiers, etc. Should have corrected normal range of hearing and sight.
TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS
The employee uses judgement in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines are involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.
WORKING CONDITIONS
A good deal of work is performed in an office environment, but it is important to realize that some of the work is on the floor and in the offices of the various properties and that you are expected to go on-site regular basis.
COMMENTS
Native American preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
