Summary

The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians (GTB) invite proposals from GTB Tribal Members to create handcrafted birch bark frames and baskets. These items will be used as culturally significant presentation pieces and gifts, reflecting GTB's respect for Anishinaabe traditions and the artistry of its citizens.

Background

GTB is committed to showcasing and purchasing traditional and contemporary works created by our Tribal Members. This RFP seeks to continue that tradition by commissioning high-quality birch bark frames and baskets that embody cultural knowledge, sustainability, and skilled craftsmanship.

Scope of Services

Items Requested:

  • Birch bark frames (quantity and size as specified by the artist in the proposal).
  • Baskets (quantity and size as specified by the artist in the proposal).

Craftsmanship: All pieces should be original, high-quality, and constructed with care for display or ceremonial use. Artists may incorporate natural elements (sweetgrass, quills, etc.) consistent with traditional practices.

Uniformity: Artistic variation is welcome

Cultural Integrity: Designs should respect and reflect GTB heritage, values, and environmental stewardship.

Qualifications

Only GTB Tribal Members are eligible to submit proposals for this project.

Submission Requirements

Please include the following with your proposal:

  • A written description and/or drawings/photographs of your proposed frame(s) and basket(s), including materials, dimensions, and any special design features.
  • A brief description of your experience working with birch bark or similar natural materials.
  • Price per piece and total price for all items offered.
  • Confirmation that you can meet the required delivery date of November 18, 2025.

Evaluation Procedure

Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the Tribal Council based on:

  • Artistic quality and cultural integrity of the proposed items.
  • Craftsmanship and durability.
  • Price and ability to meet deadlines.

Offer Submission Deadline

To be considered, a bid must be submitted by Monday, October 20, 2025.

Award notices will be sent by Thursday, October 23, 2025.

Artwork materials will be due by Tuesday, November 18, 2025.
