Police Detective

SUMMARY

The Detective will assist the Captain of Police and Sergeant with day-to-day operation of the sub-department and conduct any investigations assigned by the Captain of Police.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Investigate criminal offenses to determine details of the crime, identify subjects, and prepare cases for prosecution in tribal, state and federal court.
  • Conduct background investigations for tribal police.
  • Conduct detailed character investigations for critical position employees.
  • Work on special investigations for prosecutor's office (6x monthly).
  • Work on drug suppression operations/intelligence network.
  • Review all reports of the officers on a daily basis and investigate any complaint deemed
  • necessary.
  • Works closely with the Captain, Sergeant and the Tribal Administration to reach goals
  • established by the Tribe.
  • Back-up road patrol officers in critical situations.
  • Inform the Captain of Police on all pending investigations.
  • Follow-up investigations on all complaints as assigned by the Captain of Police.
  • Respond to major incidents occurring on the Reservation and assume command
  • unless otherwise directed by the Captain of Police.
  • Attend all staff and Tribal Council meetings when mandated by the Captain of Police.
  • Attend all appropriate specialized training sessions as deemed appropriate by Captain.
  • Liaison between FBI and Federal Court.
  • Patrol areas within the GTB jurisdiction and enforce all tribal criminal and traffic laws, ordinances to include civil traffic laws, United States Codes or 25 CFR.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Identify, collect and preserve evidence at crime scene. Technical expertise needed to prepare evidence for testing at laboratories and work with crime lab to prepare evidence for court presentation.
  • Must qualify semi-annually for firearms certification with a score of seventy (70) percent.
  • Must be able to communicate with Native American people.
  • Must be familiar with the LEIN terminal.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Must possess an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice. *
  • A minimum of five years experience as a certified police officer.
  • Must be certified or certifiable by Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).
  • Must have advance training in the field of Law Enforcement along with successful completion of the Michigan State Police Detective School or similar training in the Federal system.
  • Must have a basic knowledge and experience in the workings of County, State and Federal Law Enforcement System.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Train other police officers on evidence at crime scenes.
  • Oversee road patrol officers at crime scenes.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to drive a car.
  • Must be able to travel throughout the State of Michigan.
  • Must be in good physical shape.
  • Ninety (90) hours of in-service training annually.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Must maintain confidentiality of all departmental information at all times.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with Personnel policies, Federal Regulations, GTB Tribal Police Department Policies and Procedures, Tribal and State Criminal Codes, Children's Code, Tribal Constitution, Michigan Motor Vehicle Code and all other applicable rules, regulations, ordinances and statutes.
  • Must have the ability to resolve problems, conflicts, and maintain high morale and professionalism with t he community.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Subject to call 24 hours a day.
  • Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions when required.
  • Must be able to work evening, weekends and holidays when required.
  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to work in an element of danger when required.
  • Must be able to work in an office setting when required.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be able to pass a BIA criminal history background check with no felonies or serious misdemeanors and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Must pass written and psychological exams. Must have a valid driver's license and be able to be insured with the Tribe. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must. Compliance with the above is a condition of continued employment.
