Summary:

This position will serve as the Grand Traverse Band's Museum and Cultural Center (hereafter GTBM&CC) Director under the general supervision of the Department Manager. Responsibilities include: the sustainability of the comprehensive museum program which assures quality programming in GTB Anishinaabek historic and cultural preservation and education, strong finances, community engagement, and positive relations with the GTB and with surrounding communities. Oversees and coordinates fiscal, administration, security and facilities services for the museum and cultural center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor degree in Museum Studies, Education Business or Administration or in a related field. *
  • Two years in museum administration or related administration.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Continually plans and develops strategies for generating resources and/or revenue for operating funds and special exhibitions; may prepare contract and/or grant proposals. Must actively seek outsourced revenue to fund the Museums operations and exhibits.
  • Participates in fundraising and other development activities to include collections, acquisitions and special events and donor relations.
  • Develops governance statutes, by-laws, and related policies and procedures in collaboration with the provisional Museum Board for approval by the Tribal Council.
  • Establishes long and short range goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures approved by the GTBM&CC Board of Directors and implements the same.
  • Responsible for the daily operations of the Museum and Cultural Center subject to the policies and procedures approved by the GTBM&CC Board of Directors.
  • Monitors and evaluate program effectiveness, effects changes required for improvement.
  • Oversees all administrative functions including recommendation for hiring, firing and evaluations.
  • Attends meetings as required and interface with various groups and individuals as needed.
  • Develops and manages budgets for the organization and performs periodic cost and productivity analysis.
  • Directs the development, scope, curation, and evaluation of exhibitions and related programming.
  • Directs collections management activities including policy-making, acquisition, care, records management, collection development and collections use in exhibitions following accepted professional standards and best practices and the GTBM & CC Collections Policy.
  • Develops educational and outreach programs for the GTB and non-tribal schools, organizations and community that encourage an appreciation and understanding of Anishinaabemowin, GTB Anishinaabek history, beliefs, and cultural paths.
  • Plans, directs and develops communication of information in coordination with the GTB Communications Director to keep the Tribe and public informed on museum and cultural center
  • Works with state and regional cultural tourism initiatives to develop marketing strategies and tools to promote regional heritage tourism that increases the public awareness of and visitation to the GTBM&CC.
  • Initiates and maintains relationships with other museums, cultural centers, institutions and other entities.
  • Promotes knowledge and general support for the museum among scholars, collectors, artists, and educators as well as among other museums and the general public.
  • Other duties as assigned.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of principles, methods and procedure, and standards for management, care and maintenance of museum collections.
  • Curatorial skills to include research, writing and exhibition design, and installation.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the scope of the GTB Museum Collection.
  • Knowledge of contracts and grants preparation and management.
  • Familiar with fundraising with private individual and non-profit foundations.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to supervise and train employees and volunteers, to include organizing, prioritizing and scheduling work assignments.
  • Record maintenance skills.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods and procedure, and standards for care and maintenance of museum collections.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control procedures.
  • Facilities and inventory management skills.
  • Proficient in word processing and other personal computer applications.
  • Ability to interact positively with the local, regional, national tribal agencies, and organizations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels and all people and groups including students, staff, as related to job responsibilities.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts in a constructive manner.
  • Adheres to the appropriate standards of conduct, and ethics including confidentiality, integrity, and honesty.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor degree in Museum Studies, Education Business or Administration or in a related field. *
  • Successful completion of the Program Directors Training within one year from date of hire.
  • Two years in museum administration or related administration.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Will supervise the Museum Curator and Archivist, other museum staff and volunteers.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment such as calculators, computers, modem, copies, fax, phone systems, etc.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequently involves sedentary work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/ or negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Occasionally involves light work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force and/or up to 10 pounds of force and/ or negligible amount of force to move objects.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The Museum Director must be able to exercise good judgment in potentially stressful situations. This position requires an individual that can work independently, as well as in a group setting. Directives and deadlines may be issues; therefore, the ability to functionally prioritize responsibilities will be held to the highest degree.

WORKING CONDITIONS

A good deal of work is performed in an office environment, but it is important to realize that some of the work is on the floor and in the offices of the various properties and that you are expected to go on-site on a regular basis.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
