Museum Curator and Archivist

SUMMARY

This position will serve as a Museum Curator and Archivist under the supervision of the Museum Director and acting Curator. Responsibilities include the processing of muniment and other records pertaining to the museum collections, identification, documentation and cataloging of all collection objects, application of all strategies necessary for the preservation of the museum collection, curatorial activities related to exhibitions, and/or related programs. Maintain positive relationships with the Grand Traverse Band and surrounding communities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration or Liberal Arts.*
  • Some related experience working in a Museum and Cultural Center.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with awarded grant objectives, activities, timelines which this position is paid.
  • Maintain and process collection documentation and management.
  • Conduct necessary preservation activities including photographing, cleaning, documentation of all incoming objects.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of historic preservation and exhibitions.
  • Researching and writing cataloging information as it relates to Eyaawing's collections.
  • Acquire, store and exhibit collections, select the theme of designs for exhibits.
  • Properly maintains collection storage and work areas.
  • Be able to give tours and presentations in a professional manner and relative to many types of audiences.
  • Promote knowledge and general support for the museum among scholars, collectors, artists and educators, as well as among other museums and the public.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of programs that are beneficial to the museum and with the GTB mission.
  • Develop publications for marketing to draw in visitors to Eyaawing events such as newsletters, flyers, rack cards, brochures, etc.
  • Maintain Eyaawing Museum and Cultural Center's social media sites.
  • To attend workshops, trainings, seminars or complete internships as directed.
  • Follows the long and short range goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures.
  • Networks with other museums, cultural centers, institutions and other entities.
  • Assist with programs that are beneficial to the museum and with the GTB mission to Tribal Members.
  • Attend meetings as required and interface with various groups and individuals as needed.
  • Assist with the operating procedures of Odawa Gimik, Eyaawing Museum and Cultural Center gift shop.
  • Assist as a NAGPRA representative for GTB and assist with contracting institutions receiving federal funding who may hold burial remains, funeral objects or objects of patrimony belonging or culturally affiliated with GTB, as described in the NAGPRA law.
  • Will require travel for training and flexible scheduling.
  • To successfully complete projects as assigned.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control procedures.
  • Inventory management skills.
  • Proficient in word processing and other personal computer applications.
  • Ability to interact positively with the local, regional, national tribal agencies and organizations.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels and all people and groups including students, staff, as related to job responsibilities.
  • Must have a pleasant, courteous and professional attitude and presence.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education, Public Administration, and Liberal Arts or in a related field is required. *
  • Some related experience working in a Museum and Cultural Center desired.

OTHER INFORMATION

Upon the successful completion of the training program the Apprentice will become qualified as the Eyaawing Museum Collections Manager and if so selected shall serve a minimum of three years.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment such as calculators, computers, modem, copies, fax, phone systems, etc.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Frequently involves sedentary work: exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/ or negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee uses judgment in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

A good deal of work is performed in an office environment, but it is important to realize that some of the work is on the floor and in the offices of the various properties and that you are expected to go on-site on a regular basis.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
