Licensed Practical Nurse

SUMMARY

This nursing position work collaboratively with the Clinic Physician(s) and other nursing staff to provide the highest quality patient care and treatment of GTB tribal members, other federally recognized tribal members, and GTB employees. This individual maintains a standard of care within the scope of their license. Nursing personnel are required on a regular basis to make decisions and determine the needs of patients and their care as part of assessment and triage with physicians, consulting with a provider regarding a patient procedure and/or if a patient's condition may be in question.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Current State of Michigan Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) certification.
  • One year of experience in primary care medical office.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, rules, procedures and administration is required.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works with GTB Clinic Medical Providers in delivering medical care and treatment to patients in a smooth, professional manner.
  • Prepares patients to be seen by providers fulfilling documentation requirements in the medical records, scheduling and/or performing appropriate diagnostic procedures as ordered by the provider.
  • Record and update chief complaint, brief and focused medical history, problem list.
  • Prepare for patient examination.
  • Record vital signs.
  • Assist and setup instruments for procedures and minor surgeries.
  • Draw blood and remove sutures when ordered by the provider.
  • Collect, prepare or perform lab specimens and tests that are to be performed at the GTB Medical Clinic.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by the providers.
  • Instruct patients regarding medications, patient education and other specific instructions.
  • Perform medication refills or phone in prescriptions as authorized and directed by providers.
  • Dispose of contaminated supplies in the proper manner.
  • Sterilize instruments when appropriate.
  • Ensure the supply room, examination rooms, procedure rooms and drug closet are inventoried, stocked and maintained adequately with documented proof.
  • Performs ordered procedures according to written policy/procedure manual specifications following Universal Precautions and OSHA guidelines at all times.
  • Acts as a patient advocate at ALL times
  • Provides in-services for community in regard to education and prevention topics.
  • Attends Clinic staff meetings, workshops, training, and department meetings.
  • Maintain current nursing licensure, CPR and AED certifications.
  • Maintains current level of continuing education units as required by licensure, updates the GTB Human Resources with certificates and keeps an updated log off meetings and in-services attended or presented.
  • Maintains highest level of care as outlined in the State of Michigan Code of Nursing.
  • Initiates ideas for improving patient care, clinic flow and clinic integrity.
  • Medical records are maintained in a neat, legible and organized manner.
  • Work areas are kept neat, organized, uncluttered and clean at all times.
  • Perform appropriate, required maintenance on equipment with quality control logs kept and maintained.
  • Demonstrate good judgment in handling situations and covered by written policies and procedures.
  • Follow all GTB Medical Clinic policies and procedures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality as per Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 and complete HIPAA compliance training.
  • Other tasks as assigned per the Nursing Director and/or Health Administrator.
  • Assist medical records staff as needed.

  • Ability to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Must have knowledge of medical procedures and terminology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team approach.
  • Must possess the ability to listen and communicate effectively to patient needs, establish a trusting relationship and use good judgment in directions given to patients.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other areas and personnel within the Clinic.
  • Must have excellent health education and presentation skills.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED certificate is required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment, such as calculators, computers, modem, copiers, fax, phone systems, etc., and other clinic office equipment, as required.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequently involves sedentary work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/or negligible amount of force to lift, carry, push, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Occasionally requires lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
  • Regularly requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm.
  • Regularly requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Occasionally requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Occasionally requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee uses judgement in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines involved, so there time pressure on occasion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

A good deal of work is performed in the clinic office environment, but it is important to realize that some of the work is on the floor throughout the clinic. Occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and mechanisms.

COMMENTS

Native American preference will apply. Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Must adhere to company policies regarding strict confidentiality.
