Librarian

* The Librarian is a grant funded position; therefore the duration of this position is subject to the guidelines outlined in the grant.

SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the overall duties of the library to include: organize, catalogue, track library materials, equipment and facilities for effective use and circulation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in General Library or Information Science
  • Must have computer, audiovisual and internet skills.
  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains accurate records and inventory
  • Keeps collection current and relevant to patrons' interest areas
  • Works with teachers and other department managers to plan and implement literature appreciation and reference activities for students
  • Assists patrons in locating and using library resources
  • Establishes and enforces behavioral standards for students and other library patrons
  • Coordinates with other local libraries as necessary
  • Coordinates volunteers when necessary
  • Under the direction of the Education Department Manager, plans, tracks, and keeps expenditures within the library budget
  • Provides instruction to patrons on equipment usage and troubleshoots computer and A/V problems

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to work well and communicate with people of all ages
  • Computer, audiovisual, and Internet skills essential
  • Ability to organize and maintain media tracking databases
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.
  • Must be able to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Must have excellent organizational skills to stay on top of daily work demands.
  • Be able to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor's Degree in General Library or Information Science. *
  • Must have 2-3 years of experience working in a library.
  • Must have computer, audiovisual and internet skills.
  • Must have experience working with students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Occasional supervision of volunteers may be necessary. This position will have required supervision of students during library sponsored activities

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Computers, Internet, audiovisual equipment, etc.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Involves sedentary work, with some lifting, reaching, walking and lifting heavy objects, such as a case of paper or several books at once. Also requires manual dexterity to operate office equipment, keyboarding and so on.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The complexity and responsibility inherent in this position requires the candidate to be able to perform independently, calmly and decisively with minimal supervision, in response to the demands of the position, with above average ability.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office environment with some anticipated automobile travel

Native American preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy regarding confidentiality is a must.
