Indian Education - Program Director

SUMMARY

Responsible for the administration of the Indian Education Program that includes the Indian Education/Youth Supplement Program. Assist students in educational advancement by providing services needed to attain those goals. To work with educational institutions as an advocate for students K-12. Provide educational youth activities throughout the year for all GTB youth. The Youth Services Program provides a Youth & Elders Hand & Hand component, Camp Alden, Unity/Junior Tribal Council/Teen Advisory, two nights a week of after school programs and monthly family events. Ensure compliance with Education Department and Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indian policies.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Associates Degree in Business Administration required.
  • Must have at least five years' experience in the administration of Tribal and Federal programs.
  • Must have 3-5 years' experience working with Native American Youth.
  • Must have and maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Administer the K-12 Indian Education program including all reports to the Tribal Council, the funding agency and management.
  • Oversee writing and submitting Indian Education program proposals.
  • Attend IEP meetings for students.
  • Attend the Michigan Federal Tribes Education Consortium.
  • Attend National and State Conferences related to education.
  • Attend Elder's Committee meetings for input in program matters when needed.
  • Assist Native American clients in acquiring education available from the Tribe and other resources.
  • Overseeing the planning and hosting of the Annual Education Banquet for recognition of student achievements.
  • Oversee the administration of K-12 supplemental grants for Education, including all reports to the Tribal Council, the funding agency and management.
  • Attend Tribal Council meetings and be available for advice to Council on Tribal Educational efforts.
  • Oversee budgets and other general administrative duties.
  • Oversee the various youth and community programs, such as Youth in Tribal Government Day, Homework labs, Annual Career Day for high school students, Financial Aid workshop for high school students.
  • Maintain open communications between program, schools, students and parents.
  • Be in compliance with all GTB and Education Department policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with Liaison Programs, Title VII, and Counseling programs to assist K-12 students who are "at-risk" and/or are in need of support services through internal policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing the planning and hosting of the Annual Education Banquet for recognition of student achievements.
  • Organize with the department manager ongoing training for staff development.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor that relate to the educational efforts of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
  • Coordinate staff training with supervisors and program directors.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to supervisor staff and communicate well with students and their families.
  • Familiar with GTB policies and procedures.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills to stay on top of daily work demands.
  • Must be a team player.
  • Must have a valid Michigan driver's license and appropriate endorsements for all vehicles operated for the performance of duties
  • Must have reliable transportation, maintain an excellent driving record, pass a Michigan Vehicle report and be able to be insured by the Tribes driver insurance carrier.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.
  • Able to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of computers: Windows/ Word/ Excel/ Microsoft Access
  • Must have a 3-5 years experience in working with Native American youth.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.
  • Must be able to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret operating, maintenance and procedure manuals, various reports
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide; compute rate, ration and percent
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Be able to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Associates Degree in Business Administration required. *

  • Successful completion of the GTB Program Director's training.
  • CPR/AED First Aid certification.

The Indian Education Program Director must be able to exercise good judgment regarding the following:

  • When and how to respond to requests for mentoring youth and/or staff.
  • Must have the patience to work with the youth and other school staff.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The Program Director must be able to exercise good judgment regarding when and how to respond to requests for mentoring youth and/or staff. Must have the patience to be with youth and participate in and supervise the program. Must be able to tolerate noise level of our Tribal Youth.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
