HS/EHS Registered Nurse - Part Time

* The HS/EHS Registered Nurse is a grant funded position; therefore the duration of this position is subject to the guidelines outlined in the grant.

SUMMARY

This part-time registered nurse position will be servicing pregnant women, children ages birth-5, and their families, with primary emphasis on children in the birth to 3 year age range, who are enrolled in the Early Head Start Home Based Programs. This position will be working collaboratively with Early Head Start/Head Start personnel. Service will primarily be conducted through home visits in the six-county service area, with some services being provided for Center Based programs and families.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing the highest level of quality in direct care and education.
  • Provide education to the community, expectant/new mothers and their families, in regards to parenting and healthcare, smoking, breast feeding, gestational diabetes, pre-natal care and post-partum depression.
  • Assess family needs, assist families to identify and establish a medical home, develop health care plans for clients, and evaluate progress towards health goals.
  • Ensures that contact and support is offered to expectant mothers and their families.
  • Monitor and document schedules of well child and pre-natal care ensuring compliance with EPSDT guidelines.
  • Maintain documentation of all contacts with families using approved forms.
  • Provide appropriate educational materials that will be determined by Early Head Start/Head Start.
  • Increase families' awareness of available resources, agencies, community programs and/or educational offerings.
  • Collaborate with area Health Departments located throughout the six-counties, and work to establish strong Community Partnership Agreements between all agencies and Early Head Start/Head Start.
  • Must conduct home visits for all families within two weeks of child's birth.
  • Attend local professional development programs, conferences and workshops that relate to this target population, which supports CEU requirements for RN licensure.
  • Participate in Early Head Start/Head Start departmental staff meetings and Health Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality.
  • Ability to communicate and relate to a wide range of people from varying cultural, ethnic and/or socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Communicates at all times with Family Services and Early Head Start Home Based Coordinator regarding child and family questions and concerns, seeking direction when applicable.
  • Provide annual training to all Head Start/Early Head Start staff regarding proper administration and handling of medications, short term exclusion and communicable disease policy, and administration and scoring of the Denver II Developmental Screening Instrument.
  • Conduct hearing, vision, height, weight, head circumference, and Denver II screenings for all students when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • To become proficient with appropriate patient/family education, i.e., child development, safety issues, preventative healthcare, immunization scheduling, etc.
  • To become proficient with guidelines from EPSDT components.
  • To become proficient with Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Needs to have good judgement and problem-solving skills.
  • Some math skills are required to perform responsibilities.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively present health care and parenting information in an objective, yet caring manner.
  • Must have good judgment in giving guidance and direction to patients and families.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with a wide variety of people.
  • Must have the ability to listen and appropriately respond to families' needs.
  • Must be aware of and sensitive to traditional cultural approaches.
  • Ability to present educational information clearly and appropriately is essential.
  • Must be willing to learn and use the center's tracking system.
  • Must be able to work cooperatively in a team approach.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed within the State of Michigan.
  • Prefer BSN, minimum of 2 years licensure.
  • Experience in Public Health nursing is a plus.
  • Would prefer 1-3 year's experience in nursing, working with patients and families.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Responsible for being proficient in use of general nursing equipment, such as blood pressure monitoring, thermometer use, glucometers, scales, otoaccoustic emissions, vision screening equipment, and a computer, copier, and other standard office equipment.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Travel throughout the six-county service area is required. Occasional kneeling, bending and sitting on floor is required. Regular lifting of children birth to 3 (up to 40 lbs) required.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to effectively handle stressful and compromising situations, while remaining focused and professional. Must be able to deal with difficult children without losing perspective. Must be able to work productively under strict time constraints with variable deadlines. Must be able to make quick, informed decisions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Universal precautions must be taken at all times. Position will encounter varied situations and conditions. Time will be spent in the home setting as well as the Benodjenh Center. Must be able to work in shared office space and tolerate classroom noise levels.

COMMENTS

Native American preference will apply. Current and former Early Head Start and Head Start parents must receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
