HS/EHS Daycare Cook

SUMMARY

Responsible for the planning, preparing and serving of all meals and snacks for children enrolled in the program. In addition, the person in this position may give morning breaks to the Head Start teaching staff and assist with childcare in the late afternoon. This person must be a sensitive, mature individual who is able to work cooperatively with supervisors and co-workers in a positive team effort approach.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To report to work promptly as scheduled by your supervisor.
  • To learn and follow Head Start performance standards that pertains to this position.
  • Plan for all meals, filling out and posting a menu of at least a four-week rotating cycle. Also record any substitutions/changes on the posted menu.
  • Record and report any food/meal concerns to the Health Coordinator.
  • Dish up food family style and serve to teacher at each table when all are seated. Refill serving dishes as requested by the staff sitting with the children.
  • Wash dishes according to program guidance.
  • Keep general kitchen area and appliances clean and neat.
  • Assist with children (in classroom and outdoors) to allow for breaks of classroom staff as necessary.
  • Plan a monthly sack menu, with assistance as needed by the Health Coordinator.
  • Keep a posted, ongoing list of necessary supplies to be purchased at the local store.
  • Shop bi-monthly for meals, snack and program supplies at the local grocery store.
  • To occasionally substitute in the Early Head Start/Head Start classroom or childcare area as needed.
  • Assist with the laundry and close down procedures.
  • To be in compliance with GTB and funding agency policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned by your supervisor that are appropriate for this position.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must pass introduction to Food Service Sanitation training.
  • Must pass and maintain CPR and Basic First Aid.
  • Employment clearance through GTB Law Enforcement Division and Michigan Department of Social Services.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with children and adults
  • Basic math skills necessary.
  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or GED.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Gas stove with oven, dishwasher, toaster, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, warming unit.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Lifting children ages 3 to 5 years of age.
  • Use smaller scale chairs and tables.
  • Able to put supplies away and rotate stock.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to effectively handle stressful and compromising situations, while remaining focused and professional. Must be able to deal with difficult children without losing perspective. Must be able to work productively under strict time constraints with variable deadlines. Must be able to make quick, informed decisions.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work with children and adults on an individual or group basis.

COMMENTS

Native American preference will apply. Current and former Early Head Start and Head Start parents must receive preference for employment vacancies for which they are qualified. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
