SUMMARY

The Fisheries & Wildlife Technician position assists in yearly assessments to gather biological data, as well as maintaining assessment gear including nets, boats and related equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a High School diploma or GED.
  • One to three years of related field experience with demonstrated abilities in fish and wildlife work.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable law, regulations, rules, procedures, and administration is required.
  • Ability to identify and general understanding of local fish, wildlife, forestry and ecosystems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists with the maintenance of comprehensive databases on management activities affecting fish and wildlife resources in treaty areas.
  • Assists with resource inventories pertaining to fish, wildlife, and plant and forest cover by collecting and compiling a variety of data.
  • Work and cooperate with other departments in various projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Supervisor and/or Department Manager, as appropriate to the project.
  • This position regularly utilizes, maintains, repairs, and calibrates specialized and sometimes dangerous equipment including electrofishing, telemetry, and water quality measuring equipment; boats, snowmobiles and off road vehicles; gill nets, trapnets, seines and trawls; and animal traps, vegetation sampling equipment and constructions tools.

  • General mechanical ability is required.
  • Basic proficiency in computers, including Microsoft Office products and database applications, e-mail and Internet.
  • Basic proficiency in typing and other office equipment.
  • Employee must be able to read and write legibly.

EDUCATIONAL and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED certificate.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a valid and unrestricted Michigan Driver's License and appropriate endorsements for all vehicles.
  • Must pass a Moving Violation Report (MVR) and be able to be insured by the Tribes driver insurance carrier.

OTHER INFORMATION

Federal Tax Exemption: 26 U.S.C. 7873(a)(1) provides an exemption from federal income tax on income, including wages, derived by members of the Tribe in the exercise of a fishing rights-related activity of the Tribe. 26 U.S.C. 7873(a)(2) provides an exemption from federal employment taxes, including FICA taxes, on wages paid to members of the Tribe for services performed in a fishing rights-related activity of the Tribe.

In accordance with the fishing rights-related tax exemption listed above, GTB has evaluated and determined that this position (Fisheries Technician) will be set at 100% tax exempt. This percentage will be re-evaluated and examined on an annual basis to determine validity in the percentage.

No supervisory responsibility required.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment including computers, faxes, copiers, phone systems, calculators. Specialized equipment include electrofishing equipment, boats and motors, gill net lifters, generators, trap net lifters, water quality measuring devices, radio telemetry, remote temperature recording devices, triple beam balances, microfiche, microscope, ice augers, trap nets, gillnets, seines, trawls, vegetation sampling equipment, and construction tools.
