Facilities Maintenance I/Head Start Bus Driver

SUMMARY

The Head Start Bus Driver/Maintenance I position is needed for meeting the transportation goals and objectives of the Benodjenh Head Start Program. In addition, this position would also be responsible for the maintenance of the Benodjenh Center Building, planning and organizing work time, when not providing transportation needs.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To follow all rules, regulations, and policies involving bus transportation, i.e., bus rules and parent handbook.
  • Must adhere to the confidentiality of the Benodjenh Center.
  • Inventory and order supplies and equipment used it the performance of duties.
  • Must perform all duties required of Utility Worker, which include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, emptying of wastebaskets for all offices, conference rooms, bathrooms, day care rooms, and break rooms.
  • Must perform all Utility Worker duties, which include shoveling of roofs, entrances and exits of tribal buildings.
  • Able to perform basic plumbing, such as repair or replacement of toilets, water and sewer lines.
  • Able to perform basic carpentry skills, such as hanging a door, repair or replace roofing, drywall, and soffit or fascia.
  • Working knowledge of basic HVAC, such as replacing thermocouples or igniters in furnaces.
  • Basic maintenance skills such as installing door hardware, hanging blinds, assembling furniture, etc.
  • Basic mechanical maintenance (both building mechanical systems and small engine) such as greasing gears, bushings and bearings, changing filters, switches, and sparkplugs.
  • Must be able to read and understand simple blueprints.
  • Perform preventative maintenance.
  • Plan and implement bus route so the children will be on the bus in the minimum amount of time. No child shall be on the bus in excess of one hour.
  • Maintain the vehicles in good working order within established guidelines for their safe operation.
  • Keep bus clean and washed as necessary to maintain proper appearance.
  • Maintain all necessary logs pertaining to service schedules, transportation activity, accident reports, and incident reports.
  • Maintain necessary certifications by attending classes/training; within 30 days must complete first aid training, CPR for infants and children, and submit to alcohol/drug testing as outlined in the GTB drug policy.
  • Conduct and document the required number of emergency bus evacuation drills each year.
  • Other duties as assigned relating to the maintenance and education departments.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must be able to instruct and train on the proper techniques and procedures to accomplish assigned tasks.
  • Must be able to communicate clearly with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Must follow OSHA rules and regulations
  • Must be able to coordinate, organize, and select proper tools, staff, and equipment as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Must have one to three years' experience in building maintenance; previous bus driving experience preferred.
  • Must pass written test with a score of 85% or better, and a practical test with a score of 100% for the maintenance portion of this position.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable with the GTB insurance carrier.

Must have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with proper endorsement for operating a school bus.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Must maintain supervision of children on the bus at all times. Provide assistance and training for other staff members.


EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Floor buffer/stripper, gardening and lawn maintenance tools, painting equipment, snow removal equipment, pneumatic tools such as nailers drills, and grinders, welder and acetylene torches, backhoe and Kubota tractor, electrical equipment, such as multimeters, and some minor maintenance tools to maintain bus in safe operating condition.


TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Balance, dexterity and motor skills are essential to this position. Shovel and remove snow, climb ladders, pruning and trimming trees and shrubbery, load and unload vehicles of building materials and other supplies; must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This includes occasionally lifting 3-5 year old children and assisting them on and off the bus.



COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Pass a criminal history background check with no felonies or serious misdemeanors and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
