Elders Assistant

* The Elders Assistant is a partially funded grant position; therefore, the duration of this position is subject to the guidelines outlined in the grant.

SUMMARY

The Elders Assistant will work with the Elders Site Coordinators, Elders Workers, and other Department Staff as appropriate, to meet the objectives of the Elders Program. Together with other staff, a plan shall be developed and implemented which will allow for ongoing appropriate programs for elders and cultural program at all Tribal Satellite Offices. To oversee all project activities which include program functions and operations, training, inspecting work, coaching and counseling, conducting performance appraisals, budgeting, staff hiring, and disciplinary action for personnel.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A. Degree in Business Administration or related field required. *
  • 3 years of experience working with elders.
  • Successful completion of Program Directors Training within one year from date of hire.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a timely submission of all reports to the various funding agencies in the Elders Department.
  • Work a flexible workweek, during appropriate hours based on the elder's programs or as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Maintain timely submission of all reporting requirements and budget monitoring.
  • Comply with all GTB policies and procedures.
  • To be in compliance with the Privacy Act and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality of participants served by the program.
  • Hold monthly staff meetings with program staff; attend monthly Elders Advisory and Tribal Council meetings.
  • Plan and organize ongoing training for staff development.
  • Address elder's concerns immediately and attempt to resolve these issues promptly.
  • To collaborate with Tribal programs, local, state and state agencies.
  • Assist staff and planning equitable services and activities for elders, families, and the community to meet objectives of the Elders Programs.
  • Ensure that reporting requirements are being met for all grants and programs in a timely fashion.
  • Annually review the elder's meal plan to determine quality, cost and timeliness of delivery at all sites.
  • To assist program staff in the recruitment of elders aged 55 and older. Outreach and home visits as required encouraging participation in program activities.
  • To maintain personal standards of high character and serve as a positive role model for Native American Elders.
  • To participate in long range program planning
  • Perform other duties as assigned that relate to the continuing delivery of service.

  • Must have general knowledge of business, accounting, accounting systems and methods.
  • Must have advanced proficiency in leadership and management skills and techniques.
  • Must have the ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Must have computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
  • Must have strong oral and written language skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with Native Americans and their families.
  • Must be able to provide accurate communication regarding required narrative reports.
  • Must be able to collect and present data.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • A Degree in Business Administration or related field required. *
  • 3 years of experience working with elders.
  • Successful completion of Program Directors Training within one year from date of hire.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Tribal/Federal Laws pertaining to Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention.
  • Training in cultural services, education, or related field desired.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Must have and maintain appropriate endorsements for all vehicles operated for the performance of duties
  • Must have reliable transportation.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment such as calculators, computers, modem, copiers, fax, phone systems, etc.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Local travel is frequently required, out-of-town travel is occasionally required. Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking, and lifting heavy objects, such as a case of paper or several books at once. Also requires manual dexterity to operate office equipment, keyboarding, copiers, etc.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee uses judgment in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines are involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

A good deal of work is performed in an office environment, but it is important to realize that some of the work is on the floor and in the offices of the various properties and that you are expected to go on-site regular basis.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy regarding confidentiality is a must.
