SUMMARY

The Cultural Services will oversee the functions of the Eyaawing Museum and Anishinaabemowin sub-departments, to meet the objectives of the Cultural Department. Assist tribal members and community such as teachings, Anishinaabemowin, history, ceremonies, feasts, baby celebrations and other seasonal activities. Attend tribal activities and at-large community gatherings at all sites within the six county areas.

MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree *
  • Previous experience working with the, Elders, Museum, Anishinabemowin and Culture.
  • 2-4 years of experience in cultural, traditional and spiritual way of life.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Language – increase the frequency of Anishaabemowin being spoken in the communities and in the workplace, through a strategic plan, considering all avenues of instruction, social media, and internet.
  • History – oral/video/written to museum and GTB library.
  • Promotion of quarterly cultural activity – celebration of culture, opportunity to learn, share and encouragement.
  • Ensure a timely submission of all reports to the various funding agencies within the Cultural Services Department.
  • Maintain timely submission of all reporting requirements and budget monitoring.
  • Comply with all GTB policies and procedures.
  • To be in compliance with the Privacy Act and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality of participants served by the program.
  • Hold monthly staff meetings with sub-department staff.
  • Plan and organize ongoing training for staff development.
  • To collaborate with Tribal programs, local, state and state agencies.
  • Ensure that reporting requirements are being met for all grants and programs in a timely fashion.
  • To maintain personal standards of high character and serve as a positive role model.
  • To participate in long range program planning for Cultural Services.
  • Must be familiar with the 7 Grandfathers Teachings.
  • Provide for interpretation or arrange for Anishinaabek healing practices for staff, Advisory committee and other interested community members as necessary.
  • Must be able to provide or arrange for individual traditional healing sessions as requested.
  • Work closely with the Eyaawing Museum Director.
  • Create a database with Anishinaabemowin and Eyaawing Museum sub-departments that provides a foundation of qualitative and quantitative measures to be used in strategic planning.
  • Work closely with Anishinabemowin sub-department staff.
  • Assist with department grant writing for culture, Anishinaabemowin, and museum programming.
  • Plan and organize the tribal powwows with the powwow committee and volunteers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that relate to the continuing delivery of service.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills as demonstrated in the 7 grandfather teachings.
  • Must have good time management and organizational skills.
  • Must possess exceptional detail and follow-up skills.
  • Must be able to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Must have advanced proficiency in leadership and management skills and techniques.
  • Must have the ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Must have computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
  • Must have strong oral and written language skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with Native Americans and their families.
  • Must be able to provide accurate communication in regards to required narrative reports.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Associate Degree *
  • Previous experience working with the, Elders, Museum, Anishinabemowin and Culture.
  • Successful completion of Program Directors Training within one year from date of hire.
  • 2-4 years of experience in cultural, traditional and spiritual way of life.
  • Training/Teaching in cultural services, education, and Anishinaabemowin.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel to other sites within the six county areas required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Michigan Driver's License and be insurable by GTB insurance carrier.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly supervise the Museum Director, and Anishinaabemowin staff.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment such as calculators, computers, modem, copiers, fax, phone systems, etc.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Local travel is frequently required, out-of-town travel is occasionally required. Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking, and lifting heavy objects, such as a case of paper or several books at once. Also requires manual dexterity to operate office equipment, keyboarding, copiers, etc.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee uses judgment in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines are involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

A good deal of work is performed in an office environment, but it is important to realize that some of the work is on the floor and in the offices of the various properties and that you are expected to go on-site regular basis.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regards to confidentiality is a must.
