Cultural Coordinator/Language Apprentice
SUMMARY
The Cultural Coordinator/Language Apprentice, in cooperation with the Cultural Department Manager, Language Instructor, and other staff is responsible for developing and implementing culture programs which will allow for ongoing appropriate activities for culture programs at all Tribal Satellite Offices within the six-county service area.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- 1-3 years' experience in culture, traditional and spiritual way of life.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Work a scheduled 40-hour week, during appropriate hours based on the culture programs or as scheduled by supervisor.
- Comply with all GTB policies & procedures including the GTB Children's Code.
- To be in compliance with the Privacy Act and to maintain the highest level of confidentiality of participants served by the program.
- To collaborate with Tribal programs, local, and state agencies.
- Will work at planned culture activities and is responsible for maintaining a 1:5 youth ratio off-site & 1:10 on-site for supervision, or as required by program.
- Attend training when necessary.
- Assist with culture training.
- Must be familiar with the 7 Grandfathers Teachings.
- To maintain personal standards of high character and serve as a positive role model.
- To participate in long range program planning for Cultural Services.
- Ensure that all classes/presentations/activities are held as scheduled, (with reasonable cause allowed).
- Implement and planning of equitable services and activities for elders, families, and the community to meet objectives of the Culture Programs
- Arrange for pick up/drop off participants as needed or scheduled.
- Provide Culture/Language resources and materials for those interested appropriate for the age-level.
- Work with Anishinaabemowin Staff in developing a curriculum for all ages and levels of Anishinaabe Language Instruction, including appropriate lesson plans, activities and local dialect.
- Perform other duties as assigned that related to the continuing delivery of service.

- Good time management and organizational skills.
- Exceptional detail and follow-up skills.
- Must be able to effectively establish priorities and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in leadership and management skills and techniques.
- Must have the ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
- General computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
- Must have strong oral and written language skills.
- Must be able to communicate effectively with Native Americans and their families.
- Must be able to provide accurate communication regarding required narrative reports.
- Must be able to collect and present data.
- Basic math skills
- Must be professional with youths, families and community.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- 1-3 years' experience working with Native American Families.
TRAVEL REQUIREMETNS
- Local travel is occasionally required.
- Out-of-town travel is occasionally required.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Involves sedentary and physically active work, exerting up to 10 pounds of force and/or amount of force to lift, carry, push, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
- Occasionally requires lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
- Regularly requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm.
- Regularly requires repetitive movement of the wrists, hands and/or fingers.
- Occasionally requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
- Occasionally requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time.
TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS
Must be able to exercise good judgment regarding the following:
- When and how to respond to requests for mentoring youth and/or staff.
- Must have the patience to work with children and participants in the program.
- Must be able to tolerate noise level of our tribal youth.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Normal office environment with anticipated automobile travel for client visits in the six-county service area. Some work to be performed in three GTB satellite offices (Traverse City, Charlevoix, and Benzie). Position may require flexible schedule, events, conferences, and training outside normal working hours. May also provide services at schools, and other locations in the six county service areas. At times, these services are provided collaboratively with other internal and external professionals.
COMMENTS
Native American preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
