Cultural Assistant Program Director

SUMMARY

The Cultural Assistant position is responsible for budgets, accounting system, grant management, organization of the department, event planning, learning, and assisting in all areas of the Cultural & Community Programming. In collaboration with other staff, cultural actives shall be developed and implemented which will allow for ongoing appropriate programs for cultural programs at all Tribal Satellite Offices within the six-county service area. Assume all duties and responsibilities associated with being the Program Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A. Degree in Business Administration or related field required. *
  • 3 years of experience with cultural activities.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain a timely submission of all reports to the various funding agencies in the Culture Department.
  • Ensure that reporting requirements are being met for all grants and programs in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain timely submission of all reporting requirements and budget monitoring.
  • Prepare routine correspondence, file, compile & monitor progress/activity reports on classroom instruction/students, maintain necessary data for statistical reports, etc.
  • Ensure that all classes/presentations/activities are held as scheduled, (with reasonable cause allowed), by teaching own scheduled events, or substituting for the other Instructors, when necessary.
  • Maintain attendance records for each class or presentation/workshop, including handouts/materials given. Copies shall be maintained in the program office.
  • Work a flexible workweek, during appropriate hours based on the cultural programs or as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Comply with all GTB policies and procedures.
  • Assist with scheduling and attending monthly staff meetings with program staff; attend monthly meetings.
  • Plan and organize ongoing teachings for staff development.
  • Assist with Anishaabemowin classes.
  • Address culture concerns immediately and attempt to resolve these issues promptly.
  • Collaborate with Tribal programs, local, state and state agencies.
  • Assist staff and planning equitable services and activities for elders, families, and the community to meet objectives of the Culture Programs.
  • Participate in long range program planning
  • Provide Language resources/materials for those interested appropriate for the age-level seeking assistance including reproducing/maintaining audio and visual resources.
  • Work with Anishinaabemowin Staff in developing a curriculum for all ages and levels of Anishinaabe Language Instruction, including appropriate lesson plans, activities and local dialect.
  • Perform other duties as assigned that relate to the continuing delivery of service.

  • Must have general knowledge of business, accounting, accounting systems and methods.
  • Must have advanced proficiency in leadership and management skills and techniques.
  • Must have the ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Must have computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
  • Must have strong oral and written language skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with Native Americans and their families.
  • Must be able to provide accurate communication regarding required narrative reports.
  • Must be able to collect and present data.
  • Successful completion of Program Directors Training within one year from date of hire.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • A. Degree in Business Administration or related field required. *
  • 3 years of experience with culture activities.
  • Training in cultural services, Anishinaabemowin, education, or related field desired.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Must have and maintain appropriate endorsements for all vehicles operated for the performance of duties
  • Must have reliable transportation.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment such as calculators, computers, modem, copiers, fax, phone systems, etc.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Local travel is frequently required, out-of-town travel is occasionally required. Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking, and lifting heavy objects, such as a case of paper or several books at once. Also requires manual dexterity to operate office equipment, keyboarding, copiers, etc.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee uses judgment in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines are involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

A good deal of work is performed in an office environment, but it is important to realize that some of the work is on the floor and in the offices of the various properties and that you are expected to go on-site regular basis.

COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy regarding confidentiality is a must.
