SUMMARY

Oversee a variety of professional dental care and treatment activities to ensure appropriate dental health standards and practices are maintained for dental patients. and supervises dental assistants, dental hygienists, and/or other dental program support personnel. The employee performs the full range of dental care and treatment activities in the clinic including but not limited to; evaluation, diagnosis, prevention and surgical or non-surgical treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, maxillofacial area and the adjacent and associated structures and their impact on the human body.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate degree of either Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD)
  • Must complete between five and eight years of post-secondary education.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted Driver's License and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide comprehensive dental care to include operative, prosthodontics, oral surgery, orofacial pain (TMD) management, diagnostic and preventive dentistry for adults and children.
  • Responsible for infection control policy and plan for dental office, to include sharps, bio-waste, amalgam disposal, needle stick protocol, and training of staff on infection control.
  • Diagnose and treat diseases, injuries, and malformations of teeth and gums and related oral structures.
  • May treat diseases of nerve, pulp, and other dental tissues affecting vitality of teeth.
  • Use masks, gloves and safety glasses to protect themselves and their patients from infectious diseases.
  • Administer anesthetics to limit the amount of pain experienced by patients during procedures.
  • Examine teeth, gums, and related tissues, using dental instruments, x-rays, and other diagnostic equipment, to evaluate dental health, diagnose diseases or abnormalities, and plan appropriate treatments.
  • Formulate plan of treatment for patient's teeth and mouth tissue.
  • To be an active member of the Managed Care Committee that meet weekly.
  • Must submit a monthly report on the GTB Dental Clinic to supervisor.
  • Must keep Dental License and DEA License current and up to date.
  • Must meet all CEU requirements as per State of Michigan Dental Licensing Board.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality as per Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996 and complete HIPAA compliance training.
  • Must keep up to date on IHS, OSHA and HIPAA requirements.
  • Must be available for on-call after regular business hours.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must have strong dental knowledge.
  • Must have excellent dental skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other areas and personnel within the Health Clinic.
  • Must have excellent dental education and presentation skills. Experience and skill in designing and conducting staff training and in-services.
  • Must have knowledge of OSHA Blood Borne Pathogens Standard and adherence to safety rules and professional standards.
  • Must have outstanding written and verbal communications skills.
  • Good time management and organizational skills are critical.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.
  • Exceptional detail and follow-up skills.
  • Work requires proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft office products and database applications.
  • Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Uses good judgment in interpreting guidelines, in adapting department procedures, or in recommending approaches or solutions for specific problems.
  • Must have knowledge of principles of evaluating program effectiveness and quality assurance.
  • Must have knowledge of principles and practices of dental and administration gained through education and experience.
  • Must be familiar with all aspects of practice management, and staff hiring and training.

TRAINING

Complete additional implant dentistry training.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct supervisory responsibilities of the Dental Hygienist, Dental Assistant and Dental Receptionist in carrying out the functions of a dental clinic.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Competence in operation of standard dental equipment: cavitron, prophyjet, X-ray, radiograph processor, panelipse, dental chair and unit, sterilizers, hand scalers, and curettes.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking, and lifting heavy objects, such as a case of paper or several books at once. Also requires manual dexterity to operate equipment for proper diagnosis and examination.

TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee uses judgment in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines are involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.

WORKING CONDITIONS

A good deal of work is performed in dental environment, but it is important to realize that some of the work is at the different offices within the Health/Dental Clinic.

COMMENTS

Native American preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
