Automotive Technician I

SUMMARY Under limited supervision, participate in the work of skilled and semi-skilled personnel engaged in the repair, maintaining and servicing of automotive vehicles. Demonstrates techniques and provides leadership to other technicians in all aspects of automotive repairs. Focus on customer service and satisfaction.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must have at least 2 years of automobile repair experience.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assists auto technicians daily.
  • Assists in the operation of a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Assists in the operation of motor vehicles repair, service, and storage facilities.
  • Assists in automotive parts inventory program, including purchasing, distribution, and accounting functions.
  • Assists in complex main engine, engine ignition, fuel system, and engine emission control system diagnosis and repair.
  • Assists in complex diagnosis and repair of automatic, standard, and electronic transmission mechanical and control systems, to include standard transmission clutch operation systems, transaxle and transfer case systems, and all phases of final driver operation.
  • Assists in complex general electrical and electronic system diagnosis and repair, to include starting and charging system, electrical wiring systems, gauges and warning systems, and accessory systems; diagnosis and repair of ventilation systems, heat and mechanical system repair
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promotes workplace safety
  • Manages Hazardous Waste and Material, identifies, inventories and records hazardous materials, selects methods of disposal, and maintains disposal records. Develop a safety plan in accordance with OSHA rules and regulations.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor




OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes and ordinances pertinent to automotive and maintenance
  • Knowledge of customer service standards and procedures
  • Uses good judgement in interpreting guidelines, in adapting department procedures, or in recommending approaches or solutions for specific problems
  • Attend all training classes necessary to keep skills updated

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or GED; and two years college level course work in automotive mechanics or management; and five years journey-level automotive repair.


LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a valid unrestricted driver license and be insurable by the GTB insurance carrier.
  • Minimal travel may be required throughout the service area.
  • Must obtain (on-going) other certifications to become a fully Certified Automobile Mechanic.
  • Must obtain an Automobile Trainee Permit (by registering with the State of Michigan)

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

General office equipment such as calculators, computers, modem, copiers, fax, phone systems, etc. Must also operate floor jacks, automotive equipment, including heavy automotive tools.


TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking and lifting heavy objects up to 75 pounds, and other physical activity. Physical work is required perhaps more than 70% of the time. Also requires manual dexterity to operate office equipment, keyboarding, and copiers. Should have corrected normal range of hearing and sight.


TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

The employee uses judgement in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines are involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Work involves considerable exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.


COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis as a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy regarding confidentiality is a must.
