Auto Service/Motor Pool Supervisor

SUMMARY Under limited supervision, plan, organize, supervise and participate in the work of a crew of skilled and semi-skilled personnel engaged in the repair, maintaining and servicing of automotive vehicles and related equipment. Instruct a college level course for Bay Mills Community College in Automotive repair. Responsible for setting up course description and curriculum. Demonstrates techniques and provides leadership to other technicians in all aspects of automotive repairs. Responsible for cultivating a department that focuses on customer service and satisfaction. Responsible for administering the program budget and periodic reports.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Automotive Technology required. *
  • Automotive repair and management experience.
  • Ten years of journey-level experience in automotive repair.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees all facets of daily operations of the organizational unit, ensuring compliance with tribal, state, and federal laws, policies and regulations.
  • Oversees the supervision of assigned personnel, which includes work allocation, training, and problem resolution. Motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • Oversees activities, vendors and supplies. Administers and monitors contracts for compliance and control costs.
  • Responsible for the development and management of annual operating budget.
  • Evaluates preventative maintenance programs, modifies as necessary to increase efficiency, service and effectiveness.
  • Manage operation of motor vehicle repair, service and storage facilities.
  • Manage automotive parts inventory program, including purchasing, distribution and accounting functions.
  • Establishes and implements short and long range goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures.
  • Coordinates work assignments with customers, technicians and outside repair facilities to ensure timely completion of repairs and deadlines are met. Schedules and organizes workflow and shop priorities.
  • Writes up daily work orders and records information into spreadsheet format.
  • Maintains various databases for information regarding vehicle repair, billing, work orders, and estimates. Prepares monthly reports as requested.
  • Performs complex diagnosis and repair of automotive ignition, fuel, drivetrain, engine, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, suspension, electrical and braking systems.
  • Leads, assists, train and instruct automotive technicians with problematic assignments, along with proper repair procedures and techniques.
  • Maintains the integrity of all employees by mentoring and providing leadership.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of shop equipment and supplies. Promotes workplace safety.
  • Manages Hazardous Waste and Material records and disposal in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Develops class guidelines and assist with class curriculum and description for Bay Mills Community College Automotive Service Technology.
  • Instructs in all areas of automotive repair for Bay Mills Community College Automotive students.
  • Performs miscellaneous job related duties as assigned.
  • Attends necessary training, workshops, continuing education, etc., as deemed appropriate by the Department Manager.

  • Must have outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good time management and organizational skills are critical.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated patience, tact, and respect.
  • Exceptional detail and follow-up skills.
  • Work requires proficiency in computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and other Microsoft office products and database applications. Must be proficient with the various software for a computerized maintenance system.
  • Ability to quickly evaluate alternatives and decide on a plan of action.
  • Uses good judgement in interpreting guidelines, in adapting department procedures, or in recommending approaches or solutions for specific problems.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to supervise and train subordinates, as well as students in the basics of automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local codes and ordinances pertinent to automotive maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to resolve, implement and enforce safety programs.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Automotive Technology required. *
  • Automotive repair and management experience.
  • Ten years of journey-level experience in automotive repair.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise two automotive technicians.


EQUIPMENT TO BE USED

Various automotive diagnosis tools and computers. General office equipment, calculators, computers, modems, copiers, fax machine, phone systems, etc.


TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work requires sitting, lifting, reaching, walking, and lifting heavy objects. Considerable physical activity. Requires heavy physical work, lifting, pushing and pulling required of objects weighing up to 250 pounds. Also requires manual dexterity to operate office equipment, keyboarding, copiers, etc. Should have corrected normal range of hearing and sight.



TYPICAL MENTAL DEMANDS

Must be able to do complex mathematical problems and formulas and be able to analyze complex information. The employee uses judgement in identifying and selecting the most appropriate procedures to use, or in determining which of several established alternatives to use. Some deadlines are involved, so there is time pressure on occasion.


WORKING CONDITIONS

Work environment involves exposure to hazardous chemicals and exhaust. Physical risks require basic safety precautions. Exposure to weather and other environment conditions daily.


COMMENTS

Native American Preference will apply. Must be willing and able to pass a background investigation and a drug and alcohol urinalysis has a condition of employment. Adherence to strict company policy in regard to confidentiality is a must.
